Pastel Art Workshop

14 May at 1.00 pm - 4.00 pm

$70

With over 20 years of teaching and creating experience, Sophia Lark, local artist and teacher, will expertly guide you through creating your own unique A3 soft pastel artwork. All materials, plus afternoon tea will be provided. Bookings are essential.

“Sophia is a born teacher, not to mention a gifted artist. I hadn’t drawn anything for 45 years and had never used pastels, but by the end of a single workshop, I felt confident doing both.” – Raewyn Caisley (Children’s Author)

About the Artist
Sophia Lark’s illustration and writing seek to reconcile her environmental activism with her creative skills and voice. Her work centres around a deep need to create new stories and arts that weave environmental issues into the collective consciousness. Sophia’s art is deeply connected to the land, with a long-standing empathy and respect for its Indigenous custodians. She believes that children’s picture books are an important medium for driving environmental and social change. In this world where scientific knowledge and creativity collide, environmental picture books play a vital role. Sophia encourages her students to speak up for nature and strives to challenge perceptions of nature’s importance, as well as how humans interact with it, within it, and with each other.

Sophia lives and works in Bedfordale, Western Australia. Her creative pursuits include drawing, painting, collage, costume design, jewellery making, sculpture, creative non-fiction, and children’s writing. Sophia has been an environmental activist since her late teens, has worked with communities and children since her early 20’s, and has been a formal educator since 2010. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communications and Cultural Studies with double majors in Creative Writing and Professional Writing and Presentation, as well as a Post Graduate Diploma in Primary Education. Sophia has also completed one year of university art training.

In 2006, she illustrated The Shy Mala, which was shortlisted for the 2006 Premier’s Award and the Environment Award. Sophia has taught art in various environments-schools, libraries, privately, community centres, and festivals. This includes four years as a teacher librarian, where she indulged her love of picture books and education, with a particular passion for instilling a greater environmental consciousness in the next generation. In 2024, she self-published Wild WA: An Alphabet Anthology with Armadale Primary School.
