Swap – Don’t Shop! Children’s Clothing Event
18 May at 10.00 am - 11.30 am
FreeThe Swap- Don’t Shop! Children’s Clothing Event has been designed to support the community’s exploration of slow fashion. It is estimated Australians buy 14.8kg of clothing every year, equating to around 56 new items per person per year. Of this, approximately 30% is disposed of in landfill within the first year of purchase, emitting methane and leaching chemicals from dyed garments.
Embracing slow, upcycled fashion shifts our relationship with clothing consumption, encouraging us to be responsible, sustainable consumers by extending the life of clothing (and shoes) and keeping materials in circulation, rather than in landfill. Recirculating an item of clothing for nine months can reduce its associated CO2 emissions by 27%, and waste by 22%.
There will be two events and entry to the swap event on Saturday is by gold coin, of which 100% will be donated to a community charity group for local projects.
Friday 17 May, 12.00 pm-4.00 pm, Rossiter Pavilion: bring along children’s clothing and shoes in good condition ranging from newborn to age 12. Children’s fancy dress costumes and maternity wear is also welcomed, however please ensure clothes are on hangers to enable hanging on clothes rails.
Saturday 18 May between 10.00am – 11:30am: Rossiter Pavilion will be transformed into the ultimate children’s clothing shopping destination, where families can choose “new to their wardrobe” children’s clothing and shoes to take home. A creative “cardboard box city” activity will be available for children in the centre of the hall.
Please note: a gold coin entry fee on Saturday will be donated to a local community group. Any clothing not selected for a new home on Saturday will be donated to local second hand shops.
With thanks to Lions Club Harrisdale/Piara Waters volunteers for partnering with the City for this event.
